Cape Verde has a population of 500.000 habitants spread across ten islands. Cape Verde is a Republic and is located 450km of African Coast alongside Senegal, Gambia and Mauritania.

The ten islands and eight islets that form the archipelago comprise 4.033Km2 and are divided in two subgroups which are defined by their position in relation with prevailing winds.

• Windward group (upwind direction) – islands of S. to Antão, S. Vicente, S. Nicolau, Santa Luzia (uninhabited), Sal and Boavista;

• Leewind group (downwind direction) – islands of Maio, Santiago, Fogo and Brava.
